When I was first told about it I really didn't get it but went along for something new to do.  I found it to be a relaxing activity.  All you need is a GPS, like Magellan or Garmin, and these days often your cell phone, which most people have or can borrow from a friend.  Then go online search for GEO Tracking and setup a free account at one of the GEO Tracking services.  You can then print out coordinates to follow with your GPS unit and off you go.
