When your local quilt shop or fabric store is having a great sale on threads, stock up on several neutrals to have on hand. You will often find these will come in handy for piecing for a variety of blocks in many colorways, and the larger spools are enough for quilting a larger quilt as well.

Dark neutrals are perfect for machine piecing darker quilt blocks, and lighter neutrals are good for machine piecing lighter quilt blocks and are often used for machine quilting as well. A dark to medium gray can work either way when piecing quilt blocks. You can often find excellent sales on these threads, so consider buying the larger ones for more value for your money.

Many fabric and craft stores have weekly coupons to get 40% to 50% off of any one non-sale item. Use these to purchase batting, a large cut of fabric, quality sewing shears or larger spools of thread.
