exact thread match for your fabric, rule of thumb is to go one shade lighter. If you are using the thread for machine quilting, one shade darker than the fabric you are matching to can enhance the stitches without making them stand out too strongly.

Remember, your sewing machine is a machine, it needs regular maintenance. If it starts to sound like the neighbor's motorcycle, then you're in BIG trouble!
