Lasagna Borders

So you've finished the center of your quilt top and it's time to apply the borders. Avoid 'lasagna borders' by cutting the fabric on the lengthwise grain instead of the crosswise grain. There is less stretch with the lengthwise grain of the fabric. Measure through the center of the top, then along each edge, add those numbers together and divide by three to get an average length. Cut the fabric for your border this length.

Find the center of both the edge of the quilt and the border piece and match those centers and pin. Next pin the outermost edges of the borders and quilt top together, then continue pinning. If there is a slight fullness, make sure you use several pins (removing as you approach them with the needle while you sew). Ease in any fullness and stitch with the longer piece on the bottom when you place the pieces under your sewing machine.

Practice makes perfect. Good reason to keep purchasing fabric!
