much less bulk. Typically, cottons come in lower lofts and polyester come in a variety of lofts. Cotton battings will shrink some when washed. Needle punched battings are easy to handle and don't require quilting to be as close together. There are also new wool battings on the market designed for machine quilting as well.

When purchasing batting, keep in mind its intended use as well. Consider a polyester, or poly/cotton blend batting for a quilt you don't want to be as heavy, or warm. Cotton and wool battings are good for needed warmth. For a wall hanging, use low loft batting.
